JCBRN Defence COE and BREEZE Software (a division of Trinity Consultants Inc.) are pleased to introduce to you the unique, efficient 3D explosion consequence modeling suite, BREEZE ExDAM (Explosion Damage & Injury Assessment Model). BREEZE ExDAM is a sophisticated modeling program that will enable JCBRN Defence to assess the structural damage and personnel injury from high explosives and vapor cloud explosions at both the micro-level (such as a room) and the macro-level (such as a city).
ExDAM consists of two numerical models - HExDAM for assessing the impacts of high explosives, and VExDAM for assessing the impacts of vapor cloud explosions. The models that HExDAM and VExDAM have replaced over time were originally developed in the mid-1980s by a number of organizations including the Strategic Defense Command, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Southwest Research Institute, Facility Army System Safety (FASS) Office, the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory, Engineering Analysis, Inc. (EAI), and BREEZE Software (Trinity Consultants, Inc.). HExDAM and VExDAM incorporate many advanced scientific methods, such as a shielding algorithm that reduces the peak pressures behind structures based on a dipole-flow-field distribution such that if an explosion is sufficient to destroy glass windows but not masonry walls, the shielding effect of the walls will be accounted for but little or no shielding will be produced by the window area.
Additionally, ExDAM includes over 100 preexisting structure materials to select from as well as the option to add new structure materials, and each material is assigned its own vulnerability parameter based upon empirical pressure-impulse (P-I) vulnerability data. BREEZE ExDAM also composes body models of 28 total body components and 19 different body component types. Similar to structure materials, empirical vulnerability data was used to develop the 19 body component vulnerability parameters (VP) and some of the body components are overpressure, P, sensitive (e.g. ear drums, lungs) while others are dynamic pressure, Q, sensitive (e.g. vertebrae, long bones).
JCBRN Defence COE began using BREEZE ExDAM beginning in August 2017 to assess the structural damage and personnel injury due to overpressure, dynamic pressure, and impulse distributions caused by high explosive and vapor cloud explosions. Having been used by defense agencies and EHS personnel around the world for decades to assess the impacts of explosions, ExDAM is a reliable, intuitive, and efficient tool that provides accurate results in a quick, effective manner.
